Happy cold Monday, everyone! Winter has found us! Brrr! And my normally tropical room has turned into a frozen wasteland as well. As I write this, I have my Northface on, because it's that cold. Bring your sweatshirts today! Our normal Monday routine starts over today. We have our Jumpstart Journal right away this morning, and then we are going to rock out our spelling work. We are starting Spelling Unit 21. This is going to be a super fun unit--it's all about food words and texture words! I'm very excited! Your spelling homework will be due on Friday!
Happy Friday, everyone! Didn't this week go so fast? We have our Jumpstart Journal this morning, and our Spelling duties. We are going to check Spelling Unit 20, and I promise I will check the extra credit from Spelling Unit 18. Then we will take our test. We are going to finish up our persuasive maps today. We have been outlining what a persuasive paper might look like if we were to plan it out. We're going to finish up that plan. To make us better writers, we need to know how to plan out our writing. Then, we are going to try writing an example Introduction. To end our fabulous Friday, we are going to need our silent reading books. We're going to do some silent reading and just relax for the last part of class.
Start planning ahead: You need a new title for your third quarter Independent Reading Project. Start turning some pages and find something you like! Have a great and safe weekend! Happy early Thursday, everyone! Today is the day! Your Independent Reading Project is due today! I will be collecting them right away at the beginning of class. Second, because those are due, we are going to go visit the library to check out a new book for third quarter Independent Reading Project. Try to pick a book you think you'd be interested in! The sooner you can get to reading it, the sooner you can get started on this project. Don't forget--you can read more than one book in a quarter! If you finish this book, please go get another one. Reading is good for your brain! Secondly, we are going to take a look at our Extended Responses and talk about how to improve our writing. Each of you did a great job in stating some of your reasons for whether or not you have responsibility to help improve the environment. Today, we are going to look at how to better your responses in both structure and argument. The better writers we are, the easier it will be to sit down and write things like this. When we read Hoot we are going to be a doing a research paper that is persuasive in nature. We are going to be focusing on how to build arguments that will help persuade your readers. Ms. Jomarron and I have found a cool website to help you do that. We're going to try it out today! http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/persuasion_map/
Check it out! It's a great tool! Happy Wednesday, everyone! After we finish up editing and adding to our brainstorm maps for our endangered species mini-lesson, we are going to share out some ideas on ways we think we can help to save the endangered species, not only in the U.S., but all over the world. We are going to do a little writing on this topic as well. After we've presented our brainstorm maps, we are going to write an extended response to a question I want you to think about. You are going to have to turn this in, and it will count as part of your Jumpstart Journal grade for this week. Do a nice job; I want to see that you can write a thoughtful response.
We are going to get started with our Hoot story in a different way. Today, we are going to be talking about endangered species. What are endangered species? I've put together a presentation to talk about what these things are, and give you an idea of the dire situation some of these animals are in:
Why?Hoot is a novel filled with a story about a strange and exciting animal that is on our endangered species list. Out characters are going to go to drastic measures to try to save this creature, and it's important that we feel the urgency and passion that our characters do. This is a great way to help us get ready to read our book.
Welcome back to school! How excited are we that it's 2016!!We are jumping right back in to our daily grind. We're starting right away again with our Jumpstart Journal, and our regular spelling work. We are starting with Unit 20 for spelling. We will take our pretest, and have our spelling work time, just like we always do! Then, we are going to get into some reading groups for our next unit. We will be reading the novel Hoot by Carl Hiassen. These groups you are in will be your groups for the entire unit. We are going to be doing in-class reading, and you will be working with your groups to get through the novel. We will talk more about it this week, but today you will meet your group members! Lastly, as a nice little review for the return of school, we are going to do a little table graffiti about great group work, individual work, discussions in class, being respectful, responsible, and proud. The second half the of the year is about to be underway, and we want to make it great! Can't wait! Again, welcome back! I'm so excited to start 2016 with all of you! |
