Happy LAST Monday of the school year, everyone! We finished The Adventures of Ulysses last week. I'm sorry so many of you were disappointed with the ending. I thought it was pretty gruesome, gory, and pretty violent, but so many of your thought it was anti-climactic. I apologize. I think that sometimes in life, our endings just aren't as exciting as we anticipate. But (as they say) that's life.

REMINDERS:
Independent Reading Projects are due THURSDAY!
ALL library books must be returned by FRIDAY, or Ms. Paganis will be calling home!
Ulysses Test is next TUESDAY, May 24!
Today we are going to be reading two short chapters in our book. Each of them are very short; only a few pages. How will Ulysses get out of the Land of the Dead? They say no man has ever survived, and ever escaped. How will he and his men get out?
After we finish reading, the second half of class is going to be spent with our speeches. We are going to watch the full Martin Luther King Jr. "I Have a Dream" speech. Most people do not know that the "I have a dream" part actually comes near the end of a six page speech. We are going to write our own "I Have a Dream" speech about our own dreams for the future. What are your dreams? What do you hope will happen in your future? How can you accomplish them? What needs to be done to make that happen? Over the weekend, start thinking about what some of your dreams may be and organizing them into ideas for your speech. |
After finally escaping the intoxicating spell of Circe, we now have to trudge onward toward the Land of the Dead. No man has ever been to see Tartarus and survived. Ulysses and his men are about to embark on a very dangerous mission. They are supposed to speak to a ghost to get their prophesy for the future. What will their fate be? Will they make it out of the Land of the Dead? Will any more of Ulysses men perish? We will read on today, to find out.
We are also going to the library today for library check out. Whatever books you check out today, they are due by MAY 16! But, you are all superstar readers, so a book in two weeks is a piece of cake!
We've not only made it mid-week, but we've made it to under 20 days of school left!
Woooo hooo!
Woooo hooo!
We are going to finish reading our story of Circe and Ulysses today. Some of us are already done (speed readers), and others still have some pages left. That's ok! We are all going to make sure we finish reading, and do our Circe worksheet (see below).
What is the moral of this crazy tale? And is there something we can learn from Ulysses experience with Circe about relationships and who we form them with?

And after we read "Circe," we are going to go back to our attributes of great speeches. We've watched a few, and all of them have different things about them. Some of our speakers are more serious, some more emotional, some more formal, some less. But what do each of them have that makes the speeches so iconic? We are going to continue to talk about these attributes, and then also discuss the different types of speeches you can give. There are four basic kinds. Do you know what makes them different, and some examples of each? | |
Happy Tuesday, everyone!
We are down to twenty days left until the end of the year. And to celebrate, we are going to read a nice long chapter in The Adventures of Ulysses called "Circe." This chapter is full of magic, excitement, and adventure. Ulysses will come to a realization about his journey, while also struggling to keep his men from turning into beasts.
And today we are also starting our speech mini-unit. We are going to take a look at this list of famous speeches, and write down what makes each of these speeches so iconic and amazing to watch. What do the speakers do? How do they speak? What are their mannerisms? Where are they looking in the audience, and how do they engage them? We are going to try to discover greatness on our own first, and then fill in what we may not have known. Take a look at the list below:
Happy Monday, everyone!
We are counting down to the end of school! Only 21 days left!

Today, we are going to finish up with The Keeper of the Winds, and then start on our next story, Cannibal Beach.
Just based on the title, what do you think this story is going to be about?

As we go through the morals of our stories, can we start piecing together a bigger idea of Greek Myths? What is so important about reading them and understanding them?
