Happy Friday! Happy PJ Day!Another week has passed. Are we better today than we started out on Monday? Spelling Unit 7 is due today. We will be correcting it, and moving to our spelling test afterward. I will also check to see who has completed Spelling Unit 6 for extra credit. Remember, it is one point per completed page. Our chapter today is "Scylla and Charybdis." We talked on Monday about keeping the middle way, and what that means. We discussed it as a metaphor for life; not going to extremes and trying to keep everything in moderation. As we read today, take note of how Ulysses tries to keep his crew in the middle way, and get past these two deadly monsters. But do things always go our way? How do we handle things when they don't? How does Ulysses?
Independent Reading Projects are due in 14 days! Be reading over the weekend!

Happy short-day Thursday, everyone! We will (finally) have library check out this week for real! Please remember to bring your books with you to class. If you do not need to check out or renew, you are sitting quietly and reading your book. There are 10 school days until your Independent Reading projects are due (15 days total). Be sure you are using your time wisely! We will also be talking about the final step of our SEE paragraphs today: Explanation. This is the part that most students miss when they are writing, but ultimately the most important part. This is the part of the paragraph that connects your statement (idea) to your evidence. This tells me exactly why something is important. How does the evidence connect to your thought? How does it prove your idea? We are going to practice putting this entire thing together so we are master writers! iReady conferences will be happening soon. You may have started them in math already, but we will be meeting to go over your scores and set some goals. This is very important, and all your teachers ask that you take this seriously. We all want you to do well, and we really want you to think about what you can do to make yourself better too! Reminders:

Welcome back to another week, folks! Can you believe that this is the final week of September, and we are trooping into October already?
An important announcement about spelling: Unit 6 in the spelling book is a review unit. This means, that Units 1-5 have selected words to review and study these words again. Unit 6 will be extra credit. I will check for completeness on Friday, should you choose to participate.
Unit 7 for spelling is affixes. Affixes are both prefixes and suffixes added to a word that can change it's meaning. Be sure to study this week!
| In our Ulysses book we left off leaving Circe's island. Ulysses finally was able to escape the clutches of Circe, and head out with his men on his adventure. However, leaving Circe means heading straight for the Land of the Dead, and that is exactly the chapter we are going to be reading today. In the Land of the Dead Ulysses is going to meet some ghosts. What are these ghosts going to say to him? We'll find out today! |
Happy Friday, everyone!
We made it through another week!
Today we have the unit 5 spelling test, and our spelling homework to grade. Next unit (Unit 6) will not be homework. All the review units in our book will be extra credit. You can earn up to one point per page for completing it. You have the weekend to get a jump start on it, if you want.
| We will finish our Circe chapter from The Adventures of Ulysses today. This was a long chapter, so some of us may be in different spots. We are going to complete this together, and then our worksheet for the chapter is going to be our first practice at SEE paragraphs. We haven't discussed explanation, but everyone should try their best to try to explain how the evidence supports the statement in their paragraph. Once we have all finished these worksheets, we will have silent reading time. Please be aware that our Independent Reading projects are due October 14. You have to read at least one and a half books per quarter to be successful at this project. Use your reading time wisely. Have a fantastic weekend, everyone! We'll see you back here for another great week of fun and learning on Monday! |
Happy short-day Thursday, everyone!
We have library checkout today. During periods 1, 3, or 7 we will be going to the library to check out, renew, or read. Be sure to bring your book with you to class. You will not be allowed to go back to your locker to get anything for the library. Be sure you are bring something to read with you if you don't need to check out.
When we are not in the library, we will be talking about SEE paragraphs again, and improving our writing. Last week we talked about statements. Statements start our paragraph off, they let us know what we are going to be writing about/what our audience is reading about. They are short, concise and to the point.
Today, we are going to discuss evidence. Once you have made your claim, you have to back it up.
Today, we are going to discuss evidence. Once you have made your claim, you have to back it up.
No one cares what you think, they care why you think it.
So, we will talk about how to organize our evidence to make sure that our statements have meaning. Bring your thinking caps, my friends! We are going to do some fun writing today!
Happy Wednesday, everyone! And to celebrate, we are going to read a nice long chapter in The Adventures of Ulysses called "Circe." This chapter is full of magic, excitement, and adventure. Ulysses will come to a realization about his journey, while also struggling to keep his men from turning into beasts.
Part of the magic Ulysses will discover in this chapter is the magic of love. Love can make us do crazy things, and will Ulysses be able to withstand the love of Circe herself?
Happy Tuesday, everyone!
We must not give up, we must trudge onward! Ulysses and his men came so close to home; so close they could actually see it. And then some troublemakers on his ship had to ruin it for everybody. So now we are back where we started. We are back in danger of the open seas, in the proximity to danger as we try to get home once again.

| One of these such dangers is Cannibal Beach. Here, Ulysses and his men are going to have to learn to scale their obstacles, to overcome fear and danger, and to always make sure they know what their surrounding are... Reminders: |
Welcome back to another week of fun and learning and excitement, my friends!
My hope is that we are enjoying our book The Adventures of Ulysses. After we finish our spelling unit 5 pretest, we are going to jump right in to our book.
Ulysses has already overcome a surprise attack from the Ciconians, rescued his men from the Lotusland, and battled Polyphemus, the cyclops. But with all this grand bravery and boldness, Ulysses has endangered and cursed his men. What will happen to him now that Poseidon has cursed both him and his men?

As we read through the chapters, although we are not annotating in our books, be sure to be asking yourself questions in your own head. Annotating to yourself is still a powerful tool when reading. | |
