Happy Monday! Welcome back to another wonderful week of learning! Happy Halloween! |
We're going to read a passage today called "Living an Examined Life: An Inside Job." I'd like you to listen to a take on what our identities are, how we define them, and the importance of examining our lives as we continue to develop our identities throughout our life. What does that look like? How do we do it? And then we're going to answer a few questions from our half sheet from yesterday about what this is all about. Take a look at the questions below: |
We'll be silent reading at the end of the period, so bring a good book to curl up with at the end of the week!
Have a fantastic weekend!

Happy Short-day Thursday, everyone!
After a long awaited week, the day is finally here where we get to go to the library and check out some amazing new reads! I can not wait. Library day is my favorite. I love being surrounded by books, getting to sit, relax and read, and not have to do any work!!
While we are in the library today, we should be looking for a non-fiction book. Quarter 2 Independent Reading Projects are going to require us to read at least one non-fiction book this quarter. I know that non-fiction isn't always our favorite, but the upside is...they tend to be shorter!

The amazing thing about getting the opportunity to read all different things is that we get to step out of our comfort zone. Doing this helps us discover things we didn't necessarily know we liked. This is one of those opportunities.
You may not like non-fiction, but this quarter, we're going to embrace something new and try it. And, guess what? If we don't like it this quarter, we don't have to read one again for the rest of the year if we don't want to! So let's get it over with and out of the way now!
Last year, this proved to be the student's favorite Independent Reading Project all year! So have some fun with it; you might just be surprised!

The YWCA will be here again today. Best behavior, great maturity, and openness and understanding, please.
Today we will be making Haikus! As we transition into fall, it's sometimes nice to stop and take a break and enjoy the scenery around us. We are going to be taking some fall leaves and writing ourselves some Haiku's today. Hopefully it will be a fun experience, and another chance to have some creative outlet.
How does an activity like this make us think about our identities? How can we show ourselves in our writing?

This week the YWCA, Young Women's Christian Association (not a religious organization), will be coming to speak to our classes this week. We are going to be discussing some serious issues today in class. I will ask all of you to please come in with some understanding, maturity, and ready to be open to having discussions.
It is going to be a very important, even if it is uncomfortable at times. I hope that the students that come to my class everyday are proud young adults, and will be engaged in conversation throughout this week.

With the start of second quarter, we are going to be preparing for our next unit. Today, during class we are going to be creating an identity journal to be writing in daily. You will be assembling and decorating this journal. It is yours, so let's make it yours! Let your own identity shine through!
Happy short-day Thursday, and last day of the week! Oh yeah, and did I mention it's the end of first quarter?
(ok, but seriously...where has the time gone already?)
We are in the library today periods 1, 3, and 7. We have another Digital Citizenship lesson. This lesson will be focused on cyberbullying. Let's really pay attention today. This is a very important and meaningful topic for all users of the internet!!
During the rest of our class, we are going to grade our spelling unit 10 homework, and take our spelling unit 10 post test. This will be our last grade of the quarter--good luck!!
We are going to relax with the rest of our time in quarter one by curling up with a good book. Everyone bring your silent reading book, and let's read, read, read for the last few minutes of class!

Enjoy your three day weekend! We'll see you Monday for the start of second quarter!!
We made it mid-week folks!
Today is our final drafting day for our myth stories. Yesterday we took a look at paragraph structure and the basics of editing. We also looked at and revised some of our peers work for content and ideas. Using that information, we had some time to go back and finish our drafting and make those changes.
Today will be our last day writing, drafting, editing or revising. You will have time in class today to finish this myth. It will be due at the end of class today. You can not turn this in late. Tomorrow is the end of the quarter, and we have no time to turn in late work. Please use your time wisely today!
Reminders:
Spelling Unit 10 due tomorrow!
Bring your library books for returns and renewals tomorrow!
Happy Tuesday, everyone!
We will continue with our myth writing today, but we are going to be sure to focus on editing vs. revising. After a little more work time to day to complete our first draft, we are going to take a look at the difference between editing and revision. And then, we are going to partner up and look at each other's work, and do some of that editing and revising. Here is the sheet we are going to be using:

Starting out the year, our major focus will be paragraph structure, and looking at one another's ideas and trying to help make them better. As the year goes on, we will continue to add to our editing and revising focuses, but for now we are starting simple and honing in on one skill at a time.
Remember, we are here to help make each other better. Learning is the confidence to be less than perfect. Learning from one another is the greatest way to improve on our own writing skills!

Welcome back to another wonderful week, folks!
We are going to jumpstart our week with Spelling Unit 10. This week's focus is words that end in a silent "e" that get a suffix. What happens to that "e" at the end?
This is the final week of quarter one, and therefore the last week to get your things turned in. Do not wait until the last minute. All late and missing work is due on THURSDAY!

Then, we are going to start a little creative writing. This week, we are going to start writing some of our own myths. After reading a couple different ones, and reading The Adventures of Ulysses we should be myth masters. We are going to talk through the structure of some of them, and then start on one of our own. Here is the sheet that we will be working with:
