Happy Thursday, everyone! We are two days away from break. Wooohooo!! Frist, I want to say how awesome yesterday went. I was soooo proud of all of you for how well you did this Fishbowl activity. You were amazing! Today is a little more down to business! We have a little Christmas Carol quiz to get to today. We're going to rock that out first. Remember, we talked about theme, symbolism, and the three spirits in class. Look through those notes that you took and get ready to use that noodle to answer these questions. Reminders:

And lastly today, we are going to do a reflection on this activity. How do we think it went? Was it fun? What is something we can change for the future? What went well, what didn't? Remember, the most important part of learning is reflecting on how well we performed, and seeing we can do better. And we can always do better! | |
Geeeeettttt excited, folks! Today we are going to read our second set of articles and prepare for our fishbowl. We read some articles yesterday on the commercialization of Christmas. We started thinking about our stance on this. Is Christmas too concerned with material goods? Are we too focused on the shopping, and buying, and exchanging of gifts? Does Christmas start too early? Is it consuming our lives?
Well, now that we have that idea floating around in the back of our minds, we are going to take a look at the Starbucks Cup Controversy. This is a major social topic that hit the scene this year. I have three articles about this, including one movie that we can gather information from. How do we feel about that cup? And how does that relate to our articles from yesterday? What conclusions can we draw from both of these topics?
Get ready to use that brain power, people! This is exciting!
Here is our planning guide. Come in tomorrow ready to discuss:

Happy Monday, everyone! Welcome back to our last week of school before break!
As part of our normal Monday business, we have our Jumpstart Journal, and Spelling Unit 19. Unit 18 is a review unit, and as I always do, I will offer that unit up for extra credit. It's the last opportunity to get a solid amount of extra credit in before the end of the quarter. But, this unit is about plural nouns. Don't be fooled: it isn't as easy as it sounds.
With our fishbowl activity, we need to look at some articles about the commercialization of Christmas, which will tie in to our Starbucks cup controversy. We are going to jigsaw some articles today. This means, we are each going to read a different article, and then share out to our groups what our article was about. That way, we get a chance to hear about the information from all of them, without actually reading them all.
But, while we read, we are going to be annotating. We may or may not have ever done this before. I will demonstrate to you how to do it, and then you are going to try it on your own. Then we'll share out, and share some of our thoughts as we gather our stances on this topic. Should be lots of fun!

We made it through one more week! Happy Friday, everyone! Officially one more week until Winter break!
First, we're going to grade our Spelling Unit 17 homework, and take our Spelling Unit 17 test. Hope you all study these Spanish derived words!!
Then, we are going to analyze some figurative language within the story, and talk about similes, metaphors, personification, symbolism, etc. Once we have identified different examples of it, we are going to go back to our K-W-L chart and talk about what pieces of figurative language we have learned from the beginning of this unit. Have we grown as learners? |
Don't forget about the Hour of Code tomorrow! Have fun, and learn something new and exciting!
Have a great weekend! One week left!
Happy Thursday, everyone! With Discovery Testing finished (thank goodness), we are going to get back to our story A Christmas Carol. Most of the classes are almost finished reading it. We are going to finish up the last parts today, and find out the fate of Ebeneezer Scrooge.
Today is also Thursday, and it has been well over two weeks since our last library check out. We are going to head up to the library to check out books, and do some reading.
What a light, easy day!
| REMINDERS: |
Today will be Discovery Testing for Reading.
We will be splitting up, and heading to the fine arts lab or library to complete your testing block.
You will have both class periods to complete the test. Bring your "A Game" today!
We have almost made it. Most of the classes are close to finished with A Christmas Carol. There are a few groups that have to finish presenting their mini-research projects. There are some groups that are all done. Either way, we are hopefully going to finish up with all our presentations today, and hopefully finish reading our story.
TOMORROW IS READING DISCOVERY TESTING!!
Make sure you come prepared to take the test. Bring your Independent Reading book for after the test, if you finish early.
Tomorrow will also be our first entry in our Independent Reading Journals. The question we are going to answer is:
What is a conflict your character has run in to so far? How have they handled that conflict? How has it changed them?
Be sure to spend time answering all the questions. First quarter you were graded on completion, this quarter you will be graded on quality of your answers. Be sure you are doing quality work.

Good Morning, and Happy Monday, everyone!
DO NOT FORGET! TODAY IS DISCOVERY MATH TESTING!
Today we have a very weird schedule. Because of Discovery Math testing today, we have about two hours per class period. We have a lot of time together today (yay!). That being said, we are going to be doing some stations, and moving around.
The Stations will looks like this:
1. Snowflake making: as you know, decorating the hall is top priority for me! Haha. So we are going to make snowflakes today with figurative language on them. You'll have some time to cut out your snowflakes and write your figurative language on them.
2. Drawing: you are going to get some time to draw a scene from A Christmas Carol today. We've been reading quite a bit of it, and you're going to have some time today to translate those words into images. I think this is very important because visualizing stories can help make them more fun for us.
3. Spelling: You will get time to work on your spelling homework in class. Use your time wisely!
4. Independent Reading Project: need to read? Ready to start your project? Use this time to work on whatever you need to. You will have plenty of time to do so.
We will rotate through the groups and also be reading a little bit as well. I'm hoping to get most of the story read today! Are we ready for a busy day?! Let's rock out this week!
