Happy Wednesday, everyone! After looking at and reading I am a Native of North America and Inside the Minds of Animals, we are going to start comparing some themes. What themes do we see in each of these pieces? We're going to do a little sticky note activity to outline some of these ideas. Then, once we identify what themes are in both of these pieces, we are going compare both of these pieces and see how the ideas in both of them relate to one another. Although one of them is about the Salishan culture, and the other is about animal intelligence, can we find some similarities between them? Most of our writing lately has been contrasting viewpoints, however, today we are going to write a solid SEE paragraph comparing these two articles. What do they have in common? How do the big ideas in each make them similar? Our Spring Break Project!!! It's finally here!!
For your project over spring break, you need to look around you while you are on vacation, and find something in nature that is beautiful, unadulterated, and something that is worth saving. Mullet Fingers committed himself to saving the burrowing owls because he felt they were so important. Chief Dan George felt so passionately about Mother nature that he wrote this essay to try to relay that message. Looking at animals, we can see the beauty and elegance in them. What is something you would want to fight for? What is something in nature that is important to you? Capture it in one image, and send it to me. With all these pictures, we will create a nature photo gallery, and celebrate the beauty the earth has to offer. Today we are going to read through our non-fiction article about animal intelligence. We are going to discuss some themes and ideas within the text as well. Below is the attachment for the text again. After we read the article, we are going to do our PARCC testing today. Ms. Koepke is doing Math PARCC Practice at the end of the week, so we need to share laptops. We are going to practice tomorrow, and get it out of the way early! Woohoo! Reminders:

| We are starting our non-fiction mini unit today as well. We are going to start by reading I am a Native of North America. First, we are going to do some background information. We are first going to look inward, and take a personal attitude survey about the way we feel about different ideas of the world. We will take the survey on the left, and talk about some of our ideas and opinion. On the second page, we are going to draw a diagram of what we think our culture looks like. Below I have also attached the presentation we will be looking at today, and possibly tomorrow. I've also included the text itself. |
