We made it to midweek, everyone! Today we are going to move on to Hoot Chapter 9. This book is flying by. We are almost halfway done with it. We had a lot of happenings with our characters yesterday. We talked about identity, and how character identity can help us understand who our characters are, and their motivations in the story. Hopefully it helped you write some more essential questions as well. Today in chapter nine, we are going to continue on that vein of thinking. What are our characters motivations as we continue reading? The end of this week means I'm going to be checking your folders again. I want some thoughtful questions we can focus on in our discussion! Also, we didn't necessarily get a lot of time yesterday to spend on our Introductions and Conclusions. I'm going to back track and give us some more time to go over those today, and be rewriting them. YES! you are going to have to do revision, editing and rewriting throughout your life. Get used to it! We're starting now. You are going to rewrite your intros and conclusions for THURSDAY! Bring in a freshly written copy to work with! Don't be lazy! Revise! Edit! Rewrite!

Happy Tuesday, everyone!Today we are going to start on Hoot chapter 8. We read Chapter 7 yesterday, and we found out who Mullet Fingers is related to, and why his name is Mullet Fingers. Officer Delinko has met Roy, and Roy's family. How are all their stories going to come together? Team members are all going to fill out their team rubrics for today. For now, they are just going to turn them in to me. Eventually, you will discuss them with your teams.
Good Monday morning, everyone! This is our first Monday in two weeks! How excited are we to be here?
Then, we are going to get into our Hoot book again today. Everyone has finished through chapter 6. We are going to pick up from there and start with chapter 7 today. First we'll go over some tough vocabulary, and then we will get to reading! Remember, you are writing essential questions on your Post-It Notes. Be sure your questions have a "how" or "why" in them. Lastly, we will be introducing something new this week. We are going to be "grading" our team leaders. Everyday, the team is going to get a rubric to grade how well their team leader did that day. And the team leader is going to get a rubric to grade how well their team performed that day. We are going to start talking to our teams about performance, responsibility and effectiveness. All these are good communication skills, and skills that will el
Happy Friday, everyone! We've made it one ore week! This one went by fast! Today, we have our normal Spelling homework to correct, and our spelling test to take. However, we also have to take the MAZE Benchmark 2 today. This is the test where you read a passage, and every 8-10 words you have the choose the word that best completes the sentence. You have three minutes to take this test. Do we remember this? It shouldn't take us too long to get through. After that, I'll be collecting your book titles for the third quarter Independent Reading Project. (I can't believe it's already third quarter). Bring your book to class! We will be silent reading today! For the second part of ELA, we will be continuing to read Hoot. I'd like us simply to finish up whatever chapters we may be in the middle of, so when we start next week, we aren't starting in the middle of a page or paragraph. Once your team has gotten to the beginning of a chapter, and written your essential question for that chapter, we will have a small discussion about this group of chapters from this week. We should be covering chapters 5-7, roughly. We have made sure to write really good, deep thinking questions for these chapters. So, when we have our discussion, they should be in depth, on task, and we shouldn't be breezing through the questions too quickly. I want you to really discuss some of the ideas you've written down. As I walked around this week and peeked at your essential questions, they are looking really great! You should have some really good discussions in your group today! They are so much better than last week! Lastly, we will be silent reading in class today. You should have your reading book with you (no, you can not read ahead in Hoot). Sit back, relax, and enjoy the start of a brand new book for third quarter! I'm reading The Maze Runner, and I'm pretty excited about it. I read for like two hours last night at home. It's really starting to get good. I'm excited to be reading today!
Then, some of us didn't get a chance to write conclusions yesterday. We are going to try to write our own conclusion today, and practice the TSS method we learned yesterday. Writing is a very important skill, and knowing how to write effectively is going to impact our lives greatly in the future. Practice makes perfect! I know it's not always the most fun activity, but it's important to practice our skills for writing. Reminders:

| Then we're going to shift our focus to writing. We know we are going to have to write a paper for this project. So, we need to know how to be the best writers we can. Today, our focus is conclusions. What do good conclusions look like? What do we need for a good conclusion? We're going to learn today. |
Reminders:
Don't forget about your Independent Reading Titles due Friday! And Spelling Unit 22!
Welcome back after a three day weekend! It's great to be back!
Today, we have our normal Jumpstart Journal and Spelling business. We are starting Spelling Unit 22. This unit is commonly misspelled words. Be sure we are studying these words; these units tend to be harder for us. Spelling is due Friday, just like always, even though it is a short week.

woo hoo!
Today Ms. Paganis is going to be coming in to talk to us about writing essential questions. When we looked at the questions and comments we've been writing on our Post-Its, we found that we don't always write the best questions for discussion. Today, she's going to help teach us how to do that, and how to write good questions. Hopefully, this will help our groups come up with better question, and more things to discuss during our discussion periods. |
With any extra time we have, we will start our next chapter in Hoot. We're going to use those questioning skills we just learned to help us as we go through. Remember, being a group leader means you are calling the shots, making the hard decisions, and helping your group be successful. Don't take your job lightly!
Reminders:
Your Third Quarter Independent Reading Book Titles are due Friday!
Spelling Unit 22 is due Friday (don't forget you always have Champion Challenge as your extra credit option)!
Happy Friday, everyone! Can you believe that we've already been back to school for two whole weeks!? Time flies when you're having fun.
Today we have our usual spelling test and spelling homework to get through. After we finish that usual business, we are going to take a look back at Chapters 1-3 of Hoot. We are going to look at some of the questions, comments, connections, and things we wrote down on our Post-It's notes while reading. One person in your group is going to be the discussion leader, and you guys will talk about the things you have read so far, and answer some of those questions you wrote down.

Then, we are going to do our small presentations from our groups. Each group is going to share their information and their posters with the class. These are low-key and simple little presentations. Don't stress! They should only be about 2-3 minutes long. It's one of those....the more you know...things.
Next week, we will continue with our Hoot reading. We need to find out who this vandal is, and who and where this running boy is going. Be ready to get in depth with our text! And don't forget to be reading over the long weekend! See you Tuesday!
Happy short-day Thursday, everyone!
Well, things didn't go quite as planned yesterday. So, today we're going to rinse and repeat!
We're going to get started with Chapter 3 today. Mrs. Jomarron is going to go over our vocabulary for the day, and get us ready to be voracious readers. Chapter 3 has a few more words than our last chapters, but I am sure we will be able to barrel through with ease.
In your circles today, the big question I want you to be thinking about it, now has the vandal gone too far? We talked about the trespassing and vandalism going on at the Mama Paula's Pancake House job site. We argued about whether or not this was an ok prank, or a more serious matter. Now I want your groups to be discussing has the vandal done too much this time? Is it getting out of hand?

Then, when Chapter 3 is read and digested, we are going to be making our posters for the short presentation tomorrow. You got your topics yesterday. You printed out your information. You filled out a sheet with your teams about the most important information from those articles you printed. Today, we are going to transfer that information to a nice, bright, beautiful poster. You are going to be presenting to the class tomorrow. Remember, this is low key. We just want some basic background info. It's easier to understand Roy, where he comes from, and where he's going if we know a little bit about the places he's been. |
Reminders:
Spelling Unit 21 is due tomorrow!
Your titles for Third Quarter Independent Reading Project are due January 22; start browsing the library shelves, or see me for some title recommendations
We've made it to mid-week, everyone! Congratulations!
On this fine Wednesday we are going to keep rolling on our Hoot book. We are getting right in to Chapter 3. We are cookin'!
Remember, being a team leader is a great responsibility. You need to help delegate to your team to get the job done. Folders need to be kept up to date, Post-It's need to be filled out daily, and your team leader needs to make sure that everyone is staying on task. This can be very difficult when you are dealing with your friends. Do your best, and I'll be there to help you.

Be confident, you are all great leaders!
When Hoot has been read and digested, we are going to segway into some brainstorm ideas. For your final project, I want your teams and groups to come up with an idea you all agree on. This can be on any topic related to environmental conservation, endangered species, Hoot or burrowing owls. Your team can be as creative as you want. You're going to brainstorm at least 10-15 ideas you have now. As the unit goes on, we're going to narrow down those ideas to find something we are all passionate about, and agree on. This should be a fun experience! Don't stress yourselves out! We aren't making any decisions today! |
Your homework today (yes, you have homework): You need to find an article or information on the burrowing owl and read it. Come in tomorrow with a copy of that information, and knowledge on what the burrowing owl is. Be an expert!
